Participatory Art for Society Engagement with Ocean and Water: engage local communities for protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity
The call supports participatory art initiatives that engage local communities in protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems. It seeks interdisciplinary projects that blend art, science, and civic participation to enhance ocean literacy, raise awareness of environmental challenges, and mobilize citizens for action. Priority is given to inclusive projects that involve underrepresented groups and address local societal and ecological issues. Selected participants will join a six-month accelerator with mentoring and training while committing to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
Type of projects to be funded
The programme funds Participatory Art Initiatives (PAIs) that combine art, science, and citizen engagement to promote ocean and water literacy. Projects should aim to increase awareness of marine and freshwater challenges, encourage local community participation, and contribute to the restoration and protection of ocean and water ecosystems.

Individual or consortium
Both individuals and consortia can apply, with preference given to interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaborations involving organizations from the arts, sciences, civil society, and public bodies.

Applicants must be based in EU Member States or Associated Countries under Horizon Europe.
Individuals, legal entities, and consortia may apply.
Each entity can participate in only one application, either individually or as part of a consortium.

The first call focuses on:
“Engaging local communities in protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.”
This broad challenge allows applicants to explore different aspects of human-ocean interaction and select a topic relevant to their local community.
Project duration
6 months – from 1 September 2025 to 27 February 2026, within the accelerator programme.
Budget, funding rates, and payment conditions
Funding rate: 100% (non-repayable financial support).
Budget limit: Up to €50,000 per selected project.
Payments: Two installments – 50% as a pre-financing payment and 50% upon project completion and final reporting.
